The best way that I have found to reduce the odor that your sugar gliders produce is to use two things. Bleach water and PureAyre spray. You also need to do some cleaning every day. This sounds like a chore doesn't it? However, everyone agreed when we decided to take the critters that everyone would help. So with the help of hubby and daughter we get the job done. Here is a link to an article I wrote that provides more detail:

We Named Him Lunar!
After the moon, since that is when he comes out at night. Here is a picture and video of him. Notice the bald spot on his head. It is actually a gland and that is how you differentiate a boy from a girl sugar glider.

Sasha Has a Boyfriend!!
We can't decide whether he is "Rocky" after the flying squirrel on The Rocky and Bullwinkle show or if he is "Jumpy" since he mostly jumps from branch to branch. One thing for sure - two is definitely more stinky than one and they are noisier at night also. I'm leaning more for "Jumpy".
He didn't have a problem jumping right into the glider bonding pouch with Sasha. He seems to be really protective of it too at times. Sometimes if I'm too noisy next to the cage he will squak at me. Sometimes he just hangs his head out the side of the pouch and stares like he is less than impressed.

How to Choose a Sugar Glider Cage
When choosing or making a cage for a little one like me, it's best to place 1/4 inch galvanized wire mesh on the bottom of the cage. That way, when I poop, it falls through pretty easily. The 1/4 inch mesh is also the perfect size so that my feet won't get caught. Also place a large plastic lid off a storage container under the bottom of the cage to catch my droppings.
This way there is no shredded mess to pick up and clean-up is easier for mom. Mom wipes up my poop and food droppings from the container lid and uses a Lysol wipe to sterilize it.

How to Choose a Sugar Glider Cage - Part 1
Sasha's advice for choosing a cage for a sugar glider.
Make sure the bars in the cage are small enough so that a glider like me cannot escape. We had this problem initially when my parents adopted me. I was small enough to fit through the bars and believe me I knew how to and it didn't take long to figure it out. Before long I was escaping the cage every night through the bars in the top! What adventures I had while Mike, Angie and the kids were asleep. One morning I had made it back to my parents bedroom. Mike was making up the bed and stepped on me accidentally. He didn't even know I was there. Ouch. Then another night I made it onto the bar and ate some chocolate covered oreos that a family friend had made mom for Christmas.
Also, make sure you tie down any doors that I can open. My paws know exactly how to open them. I can also figure out latches!!
The best thing is for you to build me a special cage! The bigger the better so that I can practice my gliding technique. I prefer a taller cage to a wider one. The cage my dad built for me is 54"h x 24"w x 17"d. I love it!!! Plenty of play room.

My Sugar Glider Diet
Sugar gliders will eat almost anything. However, a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables is best for little ones like me. You also need to provide sugar glider formula or pellets every day to insure that I get adequate calcium and protein. Occassionally you can also thrown in some lean ham or turkey or an almond as a treat. Almonds are my favorite, but I can only get one every couple of days. My other favorite foods are blueberries, grapes craisins and carrots . Spinach leaves are good and so are bananas.
I have two food trays. One filled with meats, fruits and vegetables and the other with the glider formula. Empty the food trays every morning as we gliders eat during the night. Put a small treat in the tray in case I happen to wake up during the day - probably won't. Then refill the trays with food in the evening. See my latest article "How to Choose Sugar Glider Food".

Meet Sasha Marie the Sugar Glider
Yes, we have a new member of our family. Her name - Sasha Marie Styles. She's really sweet! She's just starting to get to know us. We adopted her a little over a month ago. We're at the point where we can hold her when she gets a treat. I took her to work with me last Friday. She did pretty good. Tried to leave her pouch a few times and in the process bit a co-worker as we were trying to retrieve her!! Oops!!!!!!!! Sorry Michael. She's begging your forgiveness.
Anyway her dad, Mike, built her an awesome cage that she is very appreciate of. It's furnished with a sleeping pouch, hammock with a couple of small stuffed animals, a Wodent wheel, eating station, a Barrel of Monkeys game that my daughter gave up so she could have it, and a large branch that she loves to run up and down. Here's a picture of her cage. Every other sugar glider is envious!!
